Dr. Mihai Diaconeasa is currently working on developing a new hybrid static-dynamic probabilistic risk assessment software platform for nuclear power plants. Concurrently, he leads the development of the Hybrid Causal Logic Analyzer system reliability software used to assess the commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts usage in Space Systems for extended deep space missions at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Phoenix human reliability analysis software for Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA). He participates in the institute's collaborations with the Southern Company and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) on licensing and probabilistic risk assessment projects of nuclear power plants. Moreover, he is involved in the joint ATanalytics and GIRS collaboration on assessing the resilience of autonomous systems for space exploration in NASA’s SBIR program.
He obtained his B.Sc. degree from University College Utrecht (UCU), the international undergraduate honors college of Utrecht University, the Netherlands and his M.S. in Nuclear Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While exploring potential research avenues in probabilistic risk assessment for nuclear power plants with Professor Michael Golay of MIT, they encountered Professor Mosleh's work on dynamic probabilistic risk assessment and eventually transferred to UCLA in order to further their collaboration. He completed his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering at UCLA on the "Integration of Qualitative and Quantitative Hybrid Causal Logic into a Simulation-based Platform for Probabilistic Risk Assessment of Nuclear Power Plants" for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
