Why Probabilistic Risk Assessment?

Publication Date Sep 12, 2005 by Garrick B.J.

Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) answers all the right questions about the potential safety and environmental threats of natural and engineered systems and helps us make better decisions concerning their management.

These questions are: What can go wrong? How likely is that to happen? What are the consequences if it does happen? Embracing the uncertainty sciences with respect to the "likelihood" question allows us, in principle, to quantify our knowledge about any type of risk.
