Pilot Testing and Assessment of Safety and Integrity of Targeted Hydrogen Blending in Gas Infrastructure for Decarbonization

The purpose of this project is to help the state of California blend hydrogen with the natural gas pipeline network. Significant gaps in knowledge preclude natural gas pipeline operators from utilizing hydrogen today. This project will address these gaps through a multi layered approach by: (1) creating a database of already available data and knowledge; (2) designing and conducting an optimum set of experiments to study materials behavior and components response under various levels of hydrogen blends, up to100%,;  (3) combining knowledge and data gathered into a suite of risk models (materials, components, and system level), (4) using these models to evaluate different decarbonization scenarios costs (i.e. capital costs and time) and benefits (i.e.  greenhouse emission savings).
