Dr. Habib Shahnazari Joins the Risk Institute

Dr. Shahnazari— Welcome to the Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences at UCLA.

Dr. Habib Shahnazari is a geotechnical engineer, researcher, and educator with more than 30 years of experience in academia, consulting, design, and construction. His work focuses on understanding and reducing geotechnical risks associated with earthquakes, liquefaction, landslides, slope instability, dams and tailings facilities, deep excavations and critical infrastructure. He is the founder and CEO of Geotekra LLC in Los Angeles. In this role, he provides advanced geotechnical analysis and supports risk-informed engineering decisions on complex projects. Before founding Geotekra, he held senior technical positions and worked on major infrastructure and geotechnical projects in the United States, Canada, and other countries.

Dr. Shahnazari spent nearly two decades as a professor at the Iran University of Science and Technology, where he also directed the Geotechnical Engineering Research Center. His academic work included leading multidisciplinary research, field investigations, and laboratory testing programs. He also supervised more than 80 master’s theses and 15 doctoral dissertations. He received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Tokyo and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada and British Columbia and is registered as an International/APEC Professional Engineer.
